Raffle Bus Mid-Week Update - 4-30-25

Published on 30 April 2025 at 20:31

Thanks to Wayne, Dan, Russell, Brian, Bill M., and Greg B. for helping out at this week’s unofficial get together over at Russell’s.

Special shout out to Wayne and Dan for driving to Yuma last week and picking up the engine from Jim Burnite (did I spell that right?). They brought it to Russell’s and we unloaded it and it’s sitting in the garage just waiting to be installed this week…..

Dan, Wayne, and I were able to get the rubber air seals slid into their channels in the engine bay and the rear support deck thing. Not sure exactly what it’s called.

Brian and Russell worked at removing the old tie rods and installing the new ones along with the new steering damper. The steering damper was hit really hard by something and was actually bent and the mount was damaged. We were able to straighten out the mount and bolt the new one in place so all is now well. They also did a great job scraping off 50 years of dried grease and dirt from the front tubes so they could clean up and/or replace the grease fittings. Then they greased everything properly and it’s now ready  to drive. Thanks, guys, it was really dirty under there but it looks so much better now.

Bill and I work on the rear hatch latch and lock mechanism. Had to remove the wood panel, clean the latch and then spent forever trying to get the locking mechanism working. Finally found one that was from Laura’s old bus and cleaned and polished it up. Looks and works great. Thank you Laura.

Bill and Greg did a terrific job installing new plaster vapor barriers at the front doors. They carefully cut out the plastic and used double sided tape to seal it in place. They did a very good job and it looks perfect. The driver door panel that our resident wood working team, Russell and Greg P, made for us was installed and it looks great. Pretty impressive woodwork!

Thanks to Greg B. for his photography skills and his photos documenting all the activity. Nice professional work.

The engine will go in this week and the remaining brake parts are arriving so we can get them installed. I picked up the brake drums and newly lined shoes at AZ Brake and Clutch on Friday. They also go by Truck Pro now, I think. Special thanks to them for getting the drums and shoes back to us in three days instead of ten. They do the best work in town on brake and clutch machine work. I’ve been relying on them for at least two decades, maybe three, and I’ve never been disappointed with the quality of their work.

I’ll post later this week the remaining things still to be done. It’ll be a busy week so anyone who wants to can come visit and just check the progress so far will have a lot to see……..
