Today Russell, Brian, David and I jumped right into the middle of removing the front spindles, the rear drums and backing plates and cleaning and scraping 60 years of grime and rust from some of the parts. The backing plates are being cleaned in order to prime and paint them before adding all new shoes and hardware. The front spindle are being replaced with newly rebuilt ones. The front backing plates need to be redone also before all new shoes and hardware are installed.
David and I did the tear down and did our best to keep Brian and Russell busy cleaning and renewing the old parts we removed. They were really up to the task and did a great job.
We did find that all the front bearings must be replaced. We already have all the other replacement parts sitting on the shelf so this should go pretty quickly. This effort will continue next week and hopefully we’ll have a rolling chassis sooner than later.
Today was slow, careful removal of old, grimy parts. Next week is lots and lots of careful cleaning of the stuff left on the bus. Much easier job. So if anyone can help with some of the cleaning and scraping next week, please let us know. A few more hands helping out would be great.
Our collective goal this year is to make Andy’s family proud.
